The story

A night kept awake

Devotees fast through the day and keep vigil through the night, offering abhishek in each of its four quarters in many traditions, and chanting Om Namah Shivaya.

Temples such as Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi draw vast crowds, while at home the offering remains simple: water, milk, bilva and attention.
